Attic Check

A cold attic doesn’t sound pleasant, but it can prevent a lot of winter damage! A warm attic means melting ice on your roof, which could cause both damage to your walls and dangerous ice dams.

Remember that heat rises, so make sure your attic is well ventilated to let the warm air escape. Also, check that there is sufficient insulation between the ceiling of your home and the floor of the attic to keep as much heat as you can inside your living quarters.

Basement Check

Your basement is the part of your house most susceptible to flooding. Once flooded, pretty much anything in your basement can be damaged beyond repair, including personal items you’ve stored down there, your water heater, and your appliances. Flooding can also cause irrevocably damage the foundation of your house.

Water Pipe Check

In the winter, your water pipes can freeze if they aren’t sufficiently insulated. When the water expands inside the pipe, the pipes might actually explode! This is both dangerous and often very expensive to repair.

Make sure you have sufficient insulation around your water pipes to prevent freezing, and keep all the seals around your pipes tight against the cold outdoors.
